Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken a bold step by designating the Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, as a foreign terrorist organization, highlighting its rapid growth and the threat it poses to the state.
This designation allows Texas to employ more aggressive measures to combat the gang's activities, including using the courts to disrupt their operations, seizing their assets, and imposing harsher penalties during prosecutions. The gang, originally formed in a South American prison, has expanded internationally and is involved in human trafficking among other criminal activities. Abbott's announcement came during a press conference in Houston, where he emphasized the gang's presence and operations in Texas, particularly noting El Paso as a critical point of concern.
The state is also developing a new database to track and counter the threat posed by Venezuelan gangs more effectively.
