Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a Lebanese pro-Palestinian militant convicted for his role in the 1982 murders of an Israeli diplomat and a US military attaché, has been released from a French prison after more than 40 years.
His release, ordered by a French court, was conditional on his immediate expulsion from France, and he has since returned to Lebanon, where he was welcomed as a hero by supporters. Abdallah, a former communist militant, had been eligible for release for years, but political sensitivities delayed his freedom. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from Israel and the US, while being celebrated by pro-Palestinian groups and many in Lebanon.
Abdallah's case remains a flashpoint in debates over terrorism, justice, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
