The European Union has accused tech giants Meta (owner of Facebook and Instagram) and TikTok of breaching key transparency and content moderation rules under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The EU alleges that both companies failed to provide researchers with adequate access to public data and did not offer users simple mechanisms to report illegal content.
Meta is also charged with having an ineffective system for users to challenge content bans and for making it unnecessarily difficult to flag illegal material. These preliminary findings could lead to hefty fines—up to 6% of global annual turnover—if the companies do not address the violations.
The move marks a significant escalation in the EU's efforts to hold major social media platforms accountable for online safety and transparency.
