At the APEC summit in South Korea, Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held her first meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both leaders pledged to pursue stable and constructive ties despite deep disagreements.
Takaichi raised serious concerns about China's actions in the South China Sea, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and around the disputed Senkaku Islands, while also emphasizing the importance of stability across the Taiwan Strait. China strongly protested Takaichi's meeting with Taiwan's APEC representative, reiterating its opposition to any official exchanges between Japan and Taiwan. Despite these tensions, both sides agreed on the need to manage differences and focus on mutually beneficial relations.
The summit highlighted ongoing friction but also a pragmatic willingness to keep diplomatic channels open.
