Historically, the pro-nuclear stance emerged alongside the development of civilian nuclear power in the mid-20th century. After World War II, many governments and scientists saw nuclear energy as a symbol of progress and modernity, capable of providing abundant electricity and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. During the 1950s and 1960s, nuclear power was widely promoted by governments, industry, and some environmentalists as a clean and futuristic solution to energy needs.

However, the ideology faced significant challenges in the late 20th century, particularly after high-profile accidents such as Three Mile Island in 1979 and Chernobyl in 1986, which fueled public fears about safety, radioactive waste, and nuclear proliferation. Despite these setbacks, pro-nuclear advocates continued to argue that the risks could be managed through improved technology and regulation.

In recent decades, the urgency of addressing climate change has led to a resurgence of pro-nuclear sentiment among some policymakers, scientists, and environmentalists. They contend that renewable energy sources alone may not be sufficient to decarbonize the global energy system quickly enough, and that nuclear power should play a complementary role.
