Objectivism is a political and philosophical ideology developed by Russian-American writer Ayn Rand in the mid-20th century. At its core, Objectivism advocates for rational self-interest, individual rights, and laissez-faire capitalism as the ideal social system. Rand argued that reality exists independently of consciousness, that individuals can gain objective knowledge through reason, and that the pursuit of one's own happiness is the highest moral purpose. In politics, this translates to a strong emphasis on individual liberty, limited government, and the protection of property righ…  ts, with the state's sole legitimate function being the protection of citizens from force and fraud.

The history of Objectivism as a political ideology began with the publication of Ayn Rand's novels, most notably "The Fountainhead" (1943) and "Atlas Shrugged" (1957), which dramatized her philosophical ideas. Following the success of her novels, Rand and her followers developed Objectivism into a comprehensive philosophical system, elaborating its principles in non-fiction works and lectures. Objectivism gained a following in the United States and influenced libertarian and conservative circles, though Rand herself was critical of both mainstream conservatism and libertarianism for what she saw as their inconsistencies or compromises. Over time, Objectivism has remained a minority ideology but continues to be promoted by organizations such as the Ayn Rand Institute and has had a lasting impact on debates about capitalism, individual rights, and the role of government.
